I'm in London. I'm in London. I am one piece of a giant puzzle that is always shifting and I don't like the feeling of it. I am so afraid of the world. Today, the prospect of trying to get to a restaurant on my own incapacitated me. But I didn't want to stay in the hostel, I wanted to push myself a little. So I walked down the street to McDonalds. The entire time I was wringing my hands together and breathing like Darth Vadar, which I understand is a bit much just for a walk down the street. But when you are in a new place, completely alone and with a history of anxiety...it doesn't usually end well. But I made it home half soaked and accomplished with a yummy salad. Even though the accomplishment was a very small one, it was one nonetheless.
People say that you'll "find yourself" if you travel abroad. I don't know if I agree. You might find out things about yourself but I think "finding yourself" is bigger than just going abroad. It is doing things you've never done. It is pushing yourself out of your comfort zone. But it can be done anywhere. At school, abroad, in your living room, in your bed. People are comfortable with different things. I might be anxious, so traveling abroad would be a good way for me to push my limits. But someone else may love traveling and need to push themselves by taking a breather here and there. Comfort limits are a personalized thing, but no matter how or where it happens, it takes a lot of energy and faith to break them. You have to know that the universe is on your side. Whatever faith it takes to break your comfort zones, you will gain so much in return.
I haven't done a lot on this trip in terms of breaking comfort zones. But I have pushed myself within the comfort zones I already know I have. It's a process. A slow one. I'm not saying it's easy. It's probably one of the hardest things you will ever do for yourself.
It's worth it.
Trust me.
